More sewing! This is design #40 from the fall 2013 Ottobre Design magazine in a size 134. I think it could use another inch or so in the sleeves. It fits right now, but it would be better if it still fit come January. This is the picture I got when I asked Jack to just stand nicely.
The fabric is a sweatshirt knit that was used for a dye disaster, making it perfect for a tester. It is really soft, and Jack likes it, so we’re just going with it. :)
I was told this is his superhero pose. (Note, I did not ask for a superhero pose.)
I have no idea what is going on here. He’s 8.
Overall, he likes it. The pockets seem to want to keep turning out, so I may do something different there next time. Perhaps a kangaroo pocket on the front instead of the side seam pockets… I have some bamboo velour that I dyed some years ago that would look much better sewn up than it does on my shelf, so we’ll see what happens.
Happy Sewing!

There has been quite a bit of sewing going on here, believe it or not!
This is a well-loved pattern around here. My notes on this one include that I added 3.25″ to it the last time I made the size 10. Without processing the date I wrote on there, I added the same this time in making them for Jack, who is 8. Or eight and a half, as he would probably say. Closer to eight and three quarters, really, but who’s counting?
Anyway, now that my brain has had time to actually think about the date, I realize that the last time I used this pattern, I was sewing for Jack’s older brother, who was 11 at the time. So, I guess I will hope that this kid likes robots for a couple more years, because these are definitely going to be too long. Ooops.
Maybe Jack will be so impressed with the really cool drawstring elastic waist that he won’t notice the fact that they are too long? Most likely he will notice, but won’t care because he is, after all, an 8 year old boy. And that’s okay. Plus, too long is much better than the too short pair he has been wearing from the pile of last year’s winter jammies.
Happy Sewing!

This is a size medium, which is a kid’s size 7/8.
With the exception of the side seams, everything is done with the ladder stitching on the serger that I posted about here. The red thread is Pearl Crown Rayon in cranberry. The fabric is Polartec lightweight WindPro.

This could have an alternate title of “Things that seemed like a good idea at the time (but really weren’t)”.
Let me start by saying that there are no problems with the pattern itself. In fact, I’m planning to use the pattern again soon.
Actually, in that picture, it mostly looks okay. But, when Jack has it on, you can see the problem. Try not to notice the mess I’m making playing in Photoshop this morning…
The color block stripe is HUGE! It’s like “HELLO! I have a GINORMOUS green stripe on today!” Doh. Usually when I color block, I start it at about the armpit. This one started about an inch too high.
Oh, well. Now he has a shirt that he can wear on the weekends. And spill stuff all over. :)
Here are some of the other pics from this morning:
I think I’ll do this pattern again in a solid. Maybe with stripes down the sleeves? That could work…
Happy Sewing!

This is the Mahpee raglan t-shirt pattern from the Spring 2012 Ottobre.
Both fabrics are nice soft cotton interlocks, very comfortable materials. This is size 134. Ottobre kind of leaves you on your own for the neck binding. I used one of my double fold bias binder attachments on my coverstitcher, starting with a piece that was 1.75″x20″ and then clipping the excess.
This is my 7 year old, he is 132cm tall and the 134 size fits him pretty well. The sleeves are a touch long, but in a month they’ll be perfect and in two months they’ll probably be barely okay.
This is what I got when I asked him to smile for real. Crazy boy. This fabric print is one of those I feel like we are just barely getting away with at his age. Second grade seems to be the end of cute, but these moose and bears were deemed okay.
As I’ve come to expect from Ottobre, all the pieces fit together nicely and it was a quick project.
Jack grew a lot over the summer and needs long sleeve shirts now that fall is officially sticking around, so expect more boy stuff here soon.
Happy Sewing!
