Pattern Making for Kids’ Clothes – Review and Giveaway!
We have a giveaway for you this week! It’s Carla Crim’s book, Pattern Making for Kids’ Clothes.
Carla Crim is known for her straightforward, easy to follow pdf pattern designs sold under the Scientific Seamstress line. She also collaborates on patterns with Jennifer Paganelli for the Sis Boom pattern line. If you have used any of her patterns, you will recognize Carla’s style in this book. The language is informal, and the information is presented in an easy to understand way.
If you have been looking at your pattern collection thinking, “I could do that!”, this book will help you get started. Slopers are essential to getting a good fit and pattern designers often make a significant investment of time or money (or both!) to obtain good slopers. This book includes slopers in sizes 3-12 in a downloadable format. 10 sizes of slopers. INCLUDED. That is AMAZING.
You can use the slopers to create your own pattern blocks, or as a guide to help you adjust patterns.
Don’t want to create your own pattern blocks? No problem! Carla provides pattern blocks for a peasant top, camp shirt, t-shirt, coat/jacket, vest, tunic, halter top, pants, skirts, two dresses, and rompers. The garments section of the book contains 90 pages of drawings and explanations of modifications you can make to these pattern blocks to bring your designs to life.
Twelve sets of pattern blocks + tons of suggested mods = hundreds (thousands?!?) of possibilities!
Want a chance to win your own copy?
Thanks to the great folks at Barron’s, we will give one away to one lucky Sewing Mamas reader! Enter below before midnight central time on Thursday, March 27.
Good luck!

Not necessarily in that order. Yesterday was a great day.
First, the UPS man was so kind as to bring me a package with these:
Very excited to review this book, and do you see there are two of them? Giveaway coming next week!
Second, I have been trying to remember to use Twitter more. Yesterday I realized, there is this whole section I never knew about. Twitter has always been kind of a strange beast for me. It was like shouting things out and never knowing if anyone was listening. Today I clicked on that little bell icon – oh, look at that! Notifications. (I am sure at this point my very techy latest app husband is shaking his head at me in horror if he is reading…) I would like to apologize to all the people who have been tweeting at me and thank everyone who’s been retweeting, I am so sorry, I did not know you were out there!
Third, this cute layette set from Oliver+S popped up in one of my feeds the other day. Mamas have asked in the forums for a good layette set that is made with wovens instead of knits. There are many options for knit sets, but patterns for wovens have always seemed more difficult to come by, so it is great to see this new set from Liesl at Oliver+S. If anyone has made it already, please let me know how it went! (images used with permission of Oliver+S)
Continuing with the theme of fabulous things, this was the outdoor temperature when I took my daughter to basketball at 7pm. There is hope that we might actually have spring this year. I can’t wait!
This weekend, we will be wrapping up winter sports with four hockey games and three basketball games for two kids. I do not see a lot of sewing in the next couple days, but this afternoon I am checking out a new retreat center. Our current location is fantastic, but this new place is a bit closer to civilization, so it is worth checking out.
Also!! If you have not entered the giveaway for the sewing class from Craftsy, here is the link! One entry per person, so get signed up! And it is super easy, seriously. It will be harder to pick a class if you are the winner than it is to get in this drawing! Sewing Mamas is a Craftsy affiliate, so if you shop with them through our links, it helps keep Sewing Mamas afloat. I really appreciate their doing this giveaway! Now go!
Have a great weekend!
