    Hanna Unders Sew-Along (image heavy)

Okay, I whipped up a pair of unders and took pics. I wanted to try out the seam-out variety, for comfort (no seams on inside). I didn't use my coverstitcher because I didn't feel like re-threading it. :doh

    Step 1: Cut out pieces.

Step 2: Sew Crotch pieces to front: Put the two crotch pieces RST, with front pattern piece facing up sandwiched in between.

Step 3: Put Back Pattern peice RST with front crotch piece. Bring inside crotch piece underneath the rest of the panties so that it fits with the other pattern pieces. You'll have the crotch pieces RST with the back pattern piece sandwiched in between WRONG side facing up.

    Panties before turning crotch.

    Panties after turning crotch:

Step 4: Stitch leg binding onto leg holes RST. I forgot to take pics of the rest of this step. Basically you just bind the leg hole. Do this however you normally do it. Usually I use the coverstitcher to stitch the binding on, but today I just used the stretch stitch on my machine.

Step 5: Sew/Serge side seams WRONG sides together. (If you're not concerned about having the side seams on the inside then just stitch RST and continue on to the elastic step.)

Step 6: Topstitch serging to tack down. My serger wasn't cooperating today, so my serging is wonky.

Step 7: But elastic ends together and zig zag (or use your machine's darning stitch) to close into a circle.

Step 8: Mark 1/4's and pin elastic to panties' waistband raw edge.

Step 9: Secure elastic onto waist with serger. I usually let the fabric hang over a tad so that the serger has something to cut off -- makes a neater edge IMO.

Step 10: Turn elastic to inside and stitch. Again, I usually use my coverstitcher here.

    All done!

I had wondered about the binding the leg openings instead of using elastic. I just hate that picot edge elastic. I mean, it's kinda pretty, but it's such a PITA to apply, IMO anyway.

    Great sew-along! Thank you!!

Looks good. I just made a pair like this as a copycat of yours. Now I can see I didn't do it your way. Off to make another pair. How many panties can one little girl have?

Those are great, Meagan.......I just love stripes. Hey, about how wide are your binding strips?? I won't be using my serger. For the elastic on the top....I can just make a regular casing or zig zag the edge and turn, right?? That waist elastic doesn't look stretched out at all....can you elaborate. I gotta ask a million questions before I start...so be prepared :sewin

    THANKS a bunch!!!

The pattern is very trim fitting, which is one reason I really like it. This pattern fits Sophie perfectly in the waist, so no it's not a gathered type waistline. You don't need elastic in the legs like most patterns call for, because they're cut to fit (you can stretch the binding piece as you sew to make the legs a bit tighter). The binding strip is 1.5" wide, but you could make it wider if you want to turn the raw edge under on the inside; I don't because I usually use the coverstitcher. I think I wrote on the pattern that if you don't intend to serge/coverstitch the elastic you can add 1/4" to the waistline and then make a regular casing.

    HTH!

The crotch part is the hardest to understand and explain. If you need to, sit at the puter with your pattern peices and read the instructions as you sew. Once you get it, you'll understand. (Obviously LOL).

Ooooo I must have missed this -- can you tuck a tracing into the package for the little girls?

Thanks so much! We need to add this to our downloads

Thanks so much for taking all those pictures. I had attempted Hanna underwear a couple times but for some reason I thought there was elastic in the legs and they always came out too tight. I think I'll try another pair, this time without the leg elastic.

Thanks for showing pictures step by step on how to make the "unders" Did you just trace a pair of Hanna underwear? or did you make your own?? I don't have Hanna here so do you think these would work using the Ottobre pattern(I forget which issue it is in) :chinscratch

This is awesome! Katie wears Hannas exclusively, size M. Now did you just trace them? I'd love to make her some as hers wear out, and when she needs the next size, rather than asking my mom to fork out the dough for the Hannas. Plus, such possibilities for colors and patterns!

Is that PRR bright stripes? I have a ton of that just waiting to be cut into...yes I like my stash to age nicely. :/

Yes, I pretty much just traced them. The first pair came out a little small so I added some to the SA. Honestly, they're still smaller in size than the original pair that I traced (which I think is the size Small). I also cut down the rise quite a bit, because IMO the rise on the Hanna Unders are quite large.

I've never used the Otto under pattern, so I can't be sure. If you wanted to construct them just like this, I'm not sure if another pattern would work, but you could always try it. The reason I like this pattern so much is because the leg holes don't require elastic. I'm not sure how big the leg holes are on the Otto pattern and if they would sag if you didn't use elastic. KWIM?

That PRR is Reds Allover Stripe.
