Bitty Baby Ruched Skirt Tutorial
Please note, your skirt will look slightly different than these photos as I changed the length of rectangles.
This tutorial will help you create a full length ruched skirt for the American Girl Bitty Baby doll.
Materials:
scrap for waistband 18" x 2.5"
Overskirt fabric cut to 25" x 7.5"
Underskirt fabric cut to 25" x 8.75"
1/4" elastic cut to 7" and 11"
2" long ribbon for tag (optional)
1/4" ribbon cut 10" long for bow
Instructions:
1. Turn overskirt to wrong side on your workspace. Measure 11.5" from left side and pin 7" long elastic to top. Using elastic stitch or zigzag stitch sew down elastic to 1/2" from bottom of fabric stretching as you sew.
2. Turn up bottom of overskirt to wrong side 1/4" and iron. Turn up again 1/4", iron, and hem. Repeat for underskirt.
3. Place overskirt on top of underskirt wrong side to right side. Baste.
4. Sew two rows of gathering stitches along top of skirt. Pull up on gathering stitches and pin skirt to waistband right sides together. Baste and serge.
5. If desired fold tag ribbon in half and baste onto one side of skirt.
6. Fold skirt and waistband in half right sides together and serge. Top stitch.
7. Turn top of waistband 1/4" to wrong side and iron. Fold waistband in half to wrong side and iron. Pin in place so that waist/skirt seam is covered. Sew, leaving 1" open to insert elastic. If desired place needle in far right position and sew around the top of the waistband for a finished look.
8. Insert 11" elastic into waistband. Overlap and sew ends together by pinning to a scrap of stablizer. Sew opening.
9. Separate overskirt from underskirt and sew bow ribbon at the bottom of the ruched portion. Tie into a bow.
