Sew-along: Flat Felled seams on the coverhem machine

Obviously these are just demonstration pieces, so you can see what I'm doing.

Two pieces of "pattern" right sides up, as they would go together



Fold the piece that will go on top under about 1/4" - 3/8" (the green one here):



Lay just barely over the top of the bottom layer, raw edges meeting on the bottom and stitch:



Back side:



You can get the same type of results by stitching right sides together, pressing seam allowances to one side then coverhemming, but this is much faster and the way its basically done in the factory....with some modifications.

Just a little warning....I would not say that this replaces serging and topstitching completely. I was just copying what was already on the briefs that I cut up. I've also seen this on athletic shirts and stuff, but probably not a good idea for an all purpose stitch.

Now, a question: Is it a durable seam? Will it hold up for a side seam on shorts or pants?

Well, it holds up to underwear....lol. I would say it would work well on knits, but I don't think I would trust it on a woven because it works so nicely with stretch. Does that make sense?

I've used a flatlock on the side seams of polar fleece pants and those held up great and this is similar to that type of seam.
