Self fabric bound undies sewalong - line assembly style

I really like making unides for me and my girls, they turn out so much comfier that RTW. I used Ottobre pattern from the 01.05 issue, model 7, but it'll surely work with hanna's knock outs, and any boyleg/granny style. Those use self-fabric binding in the legs that is easier to apply and comfier than elastic or FOE IMO.

I recommend making a pair from unloved fabric to test the fit before maing a bunch. The Ottobre pattern has a very high rise but dd loves having her belly covered. Of course, they'll only work with knit fabric. I used cotton jersey, cotton rib and cotton/lycra.

I like line assembly style because it goes fawster, and I just switch machines once. I made all the first part in the serger and I switched to my sm to topstitch. You can use a stretch stitch in your sewing machine where I used my serger.

    Soo, let's go

    1. Prepare pattern pieces. I didn't take a pic of this, but you sould have, a font, a back and two ribbing pieces, cut in the direction ofbthe stretch of fabric and measuring approx 2" height and slightly smaller that the leg hole measure, depending on the stretchyness of fabric. TIP: You can cut them longer if you're unsure as you won't be sewing them in a circle you can always chop the extra.

    2. Sew/serge front to back at crotch, right sides together. Add a crotch liner if you feel like. I didn't

Fold your binding strip in half lenghtwise, wrong sides together. Sew/serge to your leg hole on the right side, pulling binding as you go. Go slowly to deal with curves. You can iron the strip in half and/or pin to the panties, but I'm lazy

    Pull binding slightly

    Dealing with curves

Repeat with the other leg. Cut extra binding if needed. You should have this now:

Serge ONE of the side seams, matchgin the binding seams. Leave the other side open

Measure and apply elastic. I use soft waistband elastic starting from one of the open edges serge elastic to wrong side of top edge, pulling as you go. Again, marking quarters and/or pinning would help, but I'm lazy

With elastic fold inwards sew the other side seam. Make sure to match the elastc and binding in both sides

Time to switch to the sewing machine, pat your serger and let her have a rest.

Topstitch leg binding seams. If you're feeling fancy use a double needle. I really like better the finish but I had 15 minutes left before supper so I just used a 3-step zigzag. Notice how I'm aiming the center opening of my presser foot towards the seam. Repeat with the other leg

Time to turn inwards the waistband. I added a "tag" (read scrap of grossgrain ribbon) in the back, as dd potty-trained recently and has problems putting her unides in the right way. Topstitch using a 3-step zigzag, stretch stitch, honeycomb stitch, or double needle. Pull slightly as you go

TA DA! Those are Maria Alejandra (2y) version, with high rise (tummy warmer)

Those are Maria Sara's (6y) lower rise as she doesn't want her undies peeking out of her jeans. I used a double needle here

Thank you! I have just been meaning to pull out a pile of knit to try if I can make undies for dd out of them (rather small scraps). Now I have no excuse to not do that...

You know, I have been wanting to sew panties forever, you gave me the final nudge to do it. I LOVE the bottom 2 pairs, where did you get those knits? DD would those!

The multicolored floral was a yummy cotton knit that I bought here on the board (dehart?)é I bought 2 yards and I made 2 dresses and 6 pairs of panties, talk about a good value. The blue I think it was baby nay, or bought in the baby nay frenzy, I got it in a trade in AW. Not too helpful, sorry

Looks great! It's interesting to see how many different ways there are to make underwear.

Awesome! My apologies if this is an obvious question, but what did you use as a pattern? I like the 2 piece aspect of this as opposed to the look of the 3-piecers I'm inspecting in otto. Is it rtw or made up or a pattern? or does anyone have a pattern to recommend that has the same look? Thanks so much!
