Hi LoriS. Thanks for the question.
If I understand it correctly you are wondering if you make the skirt where the sqaures have a pattern to them, will they look funny when you sew them together? If so, I woul recommend using at least 5 fabrics to try and avoid that. I have made this dress with much succcess using a pattern, I also used 8 fabrics for the patwork portion though...
