double needles (and triple needles) give perfectly lined up lines -

When you first start to use double needles I would say start on a stable fabric. Also you are going to get a zigzag look on the back.

The stitch goes two stitches forward and one stitch back. That is what I have been using. The double needle scares me a bit but I'm learning. I like the look of a single stitch much better though.
