I have actually had this in the works for a while. I have the dye along with 24 pictures

here (http://Pam-O.smugmug.com/gallery/4796446_TkRsG/1/284888717_PWmfu)

I think I made it open to public. If not pw is swirl.

post here if you have any questions. you can find the basic dharma instructions

here (http://www.dharmatrading.co m/html/eng/1498922-AA.shtml)

let me know what you think

WOW that is cool! I've never seen that before.

So can you lay several pieces of fabric onto the same dye?

if your pan is big enough to accomodate them. but between pieces you will need to rinse your pan, and redo your base and swirls.

Great Pam! :)

And...not Pam...but once you 'use' the marbled shaving cream, you cannot lay another piece of fabric over the same spot. You can if you have a big enough pan, do multiple pieces though.

That makes sense! Thanks!

Okay, I couple of questions:

What happens if you don't let your fabric dry before dyeing?

How much dye do you use per squeeze bottle?

Do you have photos of the fabrics you have dyed this way?

What color combos do you like the best? Any color combos to avoid?

Thanks :)

Do you let it completely dry or is it slightly damp when you put it on the shaving cream?

Pam has sold lots of her stuff on her hyena cart- you can check her listings to see lots of awesome stuff!

I didn't let my stuff dry, but it wasn't dripping either. Not sure if it was supposed to be dry though? It worked for me, lol.

As for colors- I wouldn't do colors that don't work together- not a lot of help, I know, but if you mixed it and it would make an ugly mess of brown, don't do it together.

The dharma page says how much dye to use per bottle. A little goes a long way with this method I've found!

I let mine dry all the way (basically hung to dry overnight works here as it's such a dry climate! LOL). If you don't, your edges are 'quite' as crisp I don't think. And you'll get more blurring of color.

I didn't let mine dry at all and I love my results. I wonder if I let it dry though if maybe the colors wouldn't soak through to the back while doing blanks.

Thanks for the dye along Pam! :D

I have never done it with damp fabric. I think the edges are a little softer and not as defined.

I never really measure how much dye to shave cream I use. I just pour a bit of dye into my bowl and stir the SC until its just thin enough to still pour rather than fall in clumps. I hope that makes sense.

Mary covered the colors, its best to use complimentary colors or you get a muddy mess.

My avatar is one of my favorite pieces. It's on it's way to Terri of FMBG.
here are some past dns that I have posted on other boards.

cant wait to see what you come up with Dina. I have 3 onesies sitting waiting for the rinse now. I tried some new colorways and used a new dye rake that dh made. I can't wait to see how they turned out.

Okay, so I soaked some old white (stained) onsies in the soda ash and they are hanging to dry. Tomorrow morning I will get my shaving cream, and then start. Hopefully I will post a dye within the next couple of days!! Thanks for your help and instructions Pam!!

i am going to have to try that!! can you get procion dyes at hobby lobby or joanns? or do i have to order from dharma?

MamaOz

you should be able to get them locally. I know they sell them at hellmart in a tye dye kit by a company called rainbow rock. you will probably be a bit limited in color choices but its somewhere to start.

If you have ACMoore, they have for real procion dyes, they are in little brown jars, I think jaquard brand? Kinda expensive though, $4/jar.
but a little goes a longish way. And they have soda ash and other stuff.

I am able to find the procion locally at "Ben Franklin" which I think is a national chain store. Again, expensive. Just less than an ounce for $4.69 OUCH!

Dick blick also carries it, but it's pricey as well!

Wow, what a great tutorial!! I've got to try that with the kids this summer.

One question...if I wanted to do this on a t-shirt, and I layed it with the front facing into the dye, would it soak through to the back?

MamaOz
04-29-2008, 04:16 PM
If you leave it too long it will but it will be spotty. You can do this with blanks but you will need to have enough room to do each side individually. I will try and get a part II for this tut doing blanks.

One question: how long do you let it sit before rinsing? TIA.

I let them sit anywhere from 2-8 hours. the longer they sit the more vibrant the color, BUT you dont get as sharp of definition. Clear as mud?

I have all my stuff ready to go. Can anyone suggest colors in the order you used? I want to do my son a shirt. And myself. What about doing it on a tarp? Would this work??? or run off. Pam did you answer about doing blanks? Do I soak 20 min then remove and lay on the other side for 20 min in another fresh dye spot?

MamaOz
06-22-2008, 10:18 AM
I use a pand wide enough to accomodate the shirt twice. with the T's you don't leave them as long, or you get bleed through. I lay them down and watch for the first little spots appear (bleed through) Then I carefully lift it up and lay the other side down.
