Ok, I did the collar!

So, work up to the collar part.

Then, place the collar on top of the dress, right sides facincg. Fold the facings to the inside, and they will overlap the collar edge a bit. Note, I didn't overlap quite enough.

Sew down the collar.

Next, place the binding strip on top. You will be working right on top of where you just sewed the collar down. Make sure to overlap the facings, so the binding is enclosed when you turn the facings out.

Turn the whole piece over. Fold the binding in to meet the collar edge, the fold again, over the collar. Sew all the way around.

Here's how it looks after you turn the facings

I topstitched from the right side, so the collar would lay flat.

OMG, yes! Thank so much, Mary! The lightbulb has gone off over my head--it was step #1 that I wasn't getting. I'm going to give it another shot today, but I'm so happy that I get it conceptually now. Thank you again!

off to see if you have a shot of the completed project up in the runway--it's a cute dress, no?

Thank you for doing that. I'm working on a dress from Ottobre 1/01 and the online translator told me I just needed to tapdance for the collar. I now think I am suppose to do what you just did. I need to work an invisible zipper in to the back too though. Still, easier then tapdancing.
Thanks again. This really helps me.

Hmmm, I noticed it looks like you did it w/a sewing machine. I would love to sew a serger bound sewalong. That's where I struggle. Oh wait...there is a great one already...Jayme did it. I guess I just struggle so there's not really any hope for me.

You could do it with the serger, at least the first two steps, but I like to baste collars on the sewing machine, and it was going so smoothly, I just finished it on there. Honestly, it went as fast, and was very neat. And much less of a bulky seam.
