Can someone please explain the diff between sent and outbox?

I have had a PM in my outbox for over an hour now, but it does not show up in my sentbox. Has the PM been sent or not? if not, how do I get it to send?

It goes to the outbox once you've sent it, once it's been read it moves to the sent box.
